Project Overview
A complete Garapa deck restoration on Kiawah Island — one of our most comprehensive projects. This expansive waterfront deck had suffered years of coastal exposure, with significant graying, surface erosion, and UV degradation across the entire surface. The homeowner wanted to restore the deck's original warm tones while ensuring long-term protection against Kiawah's extreme ocean conditions.
The Challenge
The Garapa surface had fully silvered from UV exposure and developed surface checking across most boards. Salt accumulation from direct ocean exposure had penetrated the grain, requiring deep cleaning before any finish could be applied. The deck's large footprint — including multiple levels and integrated seating — demanded a systematic approach to ensure consistent finish quality across every section.
Our Process
- 1
Full structural inspection — verified board integrity, fastener condition, and joist health
- 2
Deep pressure washing to remove salt deposits, mildew, and degraded surface fibers
- 3
Complete sanding pass to open the grain and remove weathered surface layer
- 4
Applied marine-grade Garapa oil in two coats with 24-hour curing between applications
- 5
Final walkthrough and custom maintenance schedule for ocean-exposure conditions
The Result
The deck's warm honey-gold tones were fully restored, transforming the outdoor space back to its original beauty. The marine-grade finish provides UV and moisture protection optimized for Kiawah's direct ocean exposure. With the maintenance plan in place, the homeowner can expect to maintain this finish with annual touch-ups.
